Ubiquitous Positioning Solutions for Pedestrian Navigation
نویسنده
چکیده
In a new research project called “Ubiquitous Cartography for Pedestrian Navigation (UCPNAVI)” at the Vienna University of Technolgy we want to explore the capabilities of providing location based information and navigation via a ubiquitous environment to enhance route guiding in smart environments. The hypothesis that ubiquitous cartography, defined as a “technological and social development, made possible by mobile and wireless technologies, that receives, presents, analyses and acts upon map data which is distributed to a user in a remote location”, enables customized route guiding with various presentation forms and therefore optimizes the wayfinding process. Smart stations (in terms of active and short-range devices) can substitute or complement traditional positioning and information transmission methods by sending information or coordinates of the station instead of trying to locate the user by a central server-based solutions. Different techniques and sensors will be tested and a knowledge-based multi-sensor fusion model will be developed to enhance location determination in smart environments. In this paper the positioning of a mobile user in indoor and urban environment based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) in combination with WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks) and Dead Reckoning (DR) is investigated. The concept of RFID positioning in different case studies and a simulation study for the integration of RFID with WLAN is presented.

Ubiquitous Positioning Technologies for Intelligent Navigation Systems
Recently new location technologies have emerged that can be employed in modern advanced navigation systems. They can be employed to augment common satellite positioning techniques (GNSS) and dead reckoning as they offer different levels of positioning accuracies and performance. An integration of other technologies is especially required in indoor and outdoor-to-indoor environments. The paper g...

Since most persons in emergency service wear some sort of headgear, we investigate how basic navigation sensors could be incorporated into a safety helmet and thereby be made truly wearable. It is well known that the key to solving the generic ubiquitous localization problem is the combination of different positioning techniques and sensor modalities. In this paper, a combined approach of pedes...

Today’s mobile technology features several sensors that when integrated can provide ubiquitous navigation assistance to pedestrians including wheelchair users. Common sensors found in most smartphones are Global Positioning System (GPS), accelerometer, and compass. In this paper, a user’s movement pattern recognition algorithm to improve map matching efficiency and accuracy in pedestrian/wheelc...
متن کاملSTEPPING – Smartphone-Based Portable Pedestrian Indoor Navigation
Many current smartphones are fitted with GPS receivers, which, in combination with a map application form a pedestrian navigation system for outdoor purposes. However, once an area with insufficient satellite signal coverage is entered, these navigation systems cease to function. For indoor positioning, there are already several solutions available which are usually based on measured distances ...
